Apple’s long awaited head mounted display, the Apple Vision Pro, was announced on June 5th during WWDC. This announcement signifies a pivotal time in immersive learning, opening up a range of capabilities for the industry.
Apple has chosen their own path, rather than compete head-on with companies like Meta, Pico, HTC and Lenovo, highlighting individual productivity and media consumption rather than taking a dependency on the still-emerging Metaverse vision. The product build quality and $3500 price point fits well between existing Apple products, such as the $7000 Mac Pro and the $2000 Mac Studio.
The two postage stamp sized Micro-OLED paired with the three layer pancake lens generates a picture so clear, you can use it instead of a monitor. A feat claimed by competitors in the past but never before realized. Processing power in the Vision Pro comes from a combination of an R1 and an M2 chip. The M2 is the same chip found in the MacBook pro laptops.
In comparison, the XR2 chip powering headsets from Meta, Pico and others is a modified Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chip, originally built for high end phones. This will enable the Vision Pro to deliver a much higher fidelity experience. Although the Apple Vision pro isn’t a cost effective immersive learning device, all such devices will, in the future, be influenced by and compared to it.
